2019 Research Incentive Award

The ARCC Board is pleased to award the 2019 research incentive award to Shelby Doyle and Nick Senske of Iowa State University for their proposal “Polycasting: multi-material 3D printed formwork for reinforced concrete.” The award aims to support and promote high‐quality architectural research and scholarship activities in ARCC member schools. The program provides faculty in ARCC member schools with the resources needed to support and enhance their research and creative activities and to develop their research agendas.

 

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle, AIA is an assistant professor of architecture at Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design. Her scholarship is broadly focused on the intersection of computation and construction and specifically on the role of digital craft as both a social and political project. Doyle cofounded the ISU Computation & Construction Lab and was hired under the ISU Presidential High Impact Hires Initiative to combine digital fabrication and design-build at ISU. She received a Fulbright Fellowship to Cambodia, a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the University of Virginia.

 

Nick Senske is an assistant professor of architecture at Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design. His research focuses on democratizing access to technology through innovative pedagogy and leveraging advanced computation and construction processes to engage local communities. He is a co-founder of the Computation + Construction Lab and the coordinator of the second-year communications sequence and undergraduate studios. He received a professional B.Arch from Iowa State University and a SMArchS in Design Computation from MIT. He is currently completing his PhD in Architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
