Faculty Position in Innovative Design Practices

University of North Carolina at Charlotte
School of Architecture (SoA)

The School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position in Innovative Design Practices at the rank of Assistant Professor. The SoA seeks to expand its longstanding commitment to design excellence and enhance its instructional and research capacity in innovative design methods, emerging technologies and transformative techniques of design. The faculty seek candidates who are able to work within and across disciplines to extend the practice of architecture, particularly as it relates to speculative issues of site, topography, context, landscape urbanism or similar areas of inquiry. Particular interest will be given to applicants who engage in computational design methods as part of their speculative process in addressing architectural design problems. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in SoA’s City Building Lab, Integrated Design Research Lab and/or Digital Arts Center.

Responsibility includes teaching core architecture design studios and seminars including but not limited to issues of site theory, representation, ecological landscapes, and design methods, as well as collaborative engagement with SoA’s research laboratories and interdisciplinary initiatives. These interests should embrace the use of innovative representational and methodological techniques. The successful applicant will join the collaborative work in the SoA, currently engaged in a range of innovative design practices employing CNC production in a state-of- the-art digital fabrication lab. Applicants must also demonstrate their ability to be an effective design studio teacher. Evidence of published design work, design scholarship, design awards and/or design practice is required. A professional degree in Architecture is required; a post-professional degree in Architecture or Landscape Architecture is desired.

The SoA offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A. in Arch.), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) and Master of Urban Design (MUD), as well as dual-degree programs in Architecture + Urban Design and Architecture + Computer Science. The School is committed to a culturally and intellectually diverse environment with a broad range of opportunities for creative work. Faculty and students are supported by exceptional facilities and a dynamic metropolitan landscape. The School is committed to an academic climate in which the dignity of every individual is respected. We celebrate diversity that includes, but is not limited to, ability/disability, age, culture, ethnicity, gender identification, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. We strongly encourage applications from women and members of under-represented groups. Faculty appointment will commence August 15, 2017.
