Tenure-Track Position in Innovative Design Practices/Building Technology

The School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Innovative Design Practices at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  As digital technologies transform the building industry, from the techniques used to design and execute buildings to the technologies and systems deployed within them, the SoA seeks to expand its instructional and research capacity in innovative building technology at the foundation and advanced level:

Position 004010: Responsibilities include teaching foundation-level design studios and core area building technology courses in integrated design of site, climate, materials, thermodynamics, environmental principles, structures, and basic building assemblies.

Position 004020: Responsibilities include teaching advanced-level design studios and core area building technology courses in integrated design of structural systems, HVAC, lighting, envelope, smart technology, building information. and performance systems.

Particular interest will be given to applicants who engage in computational methods as part of their teaching, design and/or research process. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in SoA’s Integrated Design Research Lab and state-of-the-art CNC fabrication lab.  Applicants must demonstrate their ability to be an effective design studio and building technology teacher. Evidence of published design work, research and scholarship, design awards, research grants and/or design practice is required. A professional degree in Architecture is required (M.Arch. and/or B.Arch. + post-professional graduate degree); professional licensure (U.S.) and/or PhD is preferred.

The SoA offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A. in Arch.), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) and Master of Urban Design (MUD), as well as dual-degree programs in Architecture + Urban Design and Architecture + Computer Science. In addition, the SoA will launch a new post-professional Master of Science in Architecture (M.S. in Arch.) this year, with a forthcoming concentration in building technology.

The SoA is committed to a culturally and intellectually diverse environment that supports a broad range of opportunities for scholarly work.
