Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture (tenure track) – UVA School of Architecture

The Department of Landscape Architecture at the UVA School of Architecture (www.arch.virginia.edu) is seeking a qualified candidate at the rank of Assistant Professor to join our faculty in the Fall of 2021. We are located in the City of Charlottesville, a complex geographic region between the Chesapeake Bay and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the site of two UNESCO World Heritage sites and ongoing civic initiatives and conflicts around social and environmental justice. This contradictory history and complex community is an important foundation for the work of our faculty, which is composed of designers, researchers, and scholars who are deeply committed to the history and theory of cultural landscapes, technological advancement in the service of public and ecological health, and a more equitable future through the practice and study of landscapes locally, regionally, and internationally. We seek a faculty member who will help us to extend this commitment to innovation, diversity, and equity and broaden the work of our faculty and students in the public interest.

Our faculty and students benefit from collaborations across the School of Architecture and the University. In recent years the School has built upon traditions of excellence in teaching and research. The studio and fabrication facilities have been renovated, digital platforms have been created to extend teaching and research capacities, and a renewed commitment to field work and full-scale experimentation, sensing, and making is underway at University-owned and partner facilities in the region. The School also maintains a robust research agenda across disciplines through individual faculty projects and within the Center for Cultural Landscapes, the Institute for Engagement and Negotiation, the Open Systems Lab, and the Next Cities Institute, among others.

Applicants should be accomplished designers and exceptional studio teachers, although prior experience with studio teaching is not a requirement. They should also be able to teach required and elective coursework in an area of specialization that can relate to the core tracks of the graduate curriculum: ecology and technology, design computation, and history and theory. We seek applicants who will bring an interest in and track record of engaging diverse interests and community values through design practices. Tenure track faculty members at UVA are expected to develop an agenda of impactful creative work, research, or scholarship (40% of time), to teach in the graduate curriculum (40%), and provide service to the academic community (20%)  The search committee is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

Tenure-track candidates will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates for this position should have an MLA or PhD in Landscape Architecture or equivalent in related field by the start date of the position. Ideal candidates will have significant practice experience in the public or private sector and/or prior teaching experience.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.
