The Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites qualified individuals to apply for one full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Architecture beginning in August 2020. The preferred candidate will have an academic record in multicultural education, diversity and inclusion. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
This position will offer faculty a platform to produce internationally recognized scholarship via publications and external funding in a clearly defined research area related to digital design and technology. Preferred areas of expertise include but are not limited to parametric design, digital fabrication and robotic craft, composite materials and tectonics, responsive systems and environments, history and theory of digital architecture, and machine learning and artificial intelligence. This position will also provide faculty with an opportunity to develop core undergraduate curriculum in digital design and technology, build advanced seminars within their area of expertise, and cultivate transdisciplinary collaborations with academic and community partners.
The Department of Architecture offers degree programs in Architecture (BS Arch, MS Arch, fully accredited M Arch 2 and M Arch 3), Interior Design (BS Interior Design), Urban and Regional Planning (MS URP), and Graduate Certificates in Historic Preservation, Urban and Regional Planning, and High-Performance Design and Sustainability. The Department is housed within the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning (CACP), which also provides a program in Construction Science and Management (BS CSM). The College houses two research centers, the Center for Cultural Sustainability and the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research, as well as the Center for Architectural Engagement.
UTSA is one of thirteen institutions within the larger University of Texas System, the second largest public university system in the United States. In 2017, UTSA President Taylor Eighmy launched a Strategic Plan and Campus Master Plan that commits the university to ten-year growth targets of 45,000 students and 2,000 faculty, with much of the growth on the Downtown Campus where The College of Architecture, Construction and Planning resides. San Antonio, one of the oldest and fastest growing cities in the nation, expects to add 1.1 million residents over the next 25 years. San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth together comprise the Texas Triangle, a rapidly expanding megaregion whose population will grow from 15 to 25 million residents in the next four decades. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university at the department level in its mission as an Hispanic-Serving Institution.
Required Qualifications:
- M Arch (B Arch is acceptable if accompanied by advanced degree, MS or PhD)
- Expertise in digital design and technology
- Potential to establish a clear research agenda
- Potential to excel in undergraduate/graduate teaching and mentorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate or PhD in Architecture or a closely related field with a focus on digital design and technology (ABD candidates will be considered)
- Professional architectural registration
- Record of excellence in research and scholarship
- Record of excellence in pedagogy and curriculum development
- Record of excellence in professional practice
- Record of outreach or transdisciplinary research
