Director of the School of Architecture

The School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applicants to apply for the position of Director of the School of Architecture. The SoA seeks a Director with the vision and leadership skills necessary to enhance the ever-increasing academic profiles and capabilities of the SoA. The Director of the SoA will provide leadership in support of the School as a critical component of the UNLV Top Tier Initiative.  The successful candidate will oversee and align academic and budgetary policy and priorities, and help to expand the academic enterprise through faculty and student support, guidance, mentorship, external relations, and fundraising efforts needed to maintain and expand the educational excellence of the SoA. The Director, in collaboration with design professions, will advocate for the SoA and effectively convey the importance of a design and research-intensive setting to the College, University, community and region, and articulate the core values of superior teaching, scholarship, and creative activity in a variety of settings.  The director will have a strong commitment to shared governance and bring significant experience in the development and administration of academic initiatives.

Minimum: The Director of the UNLV School of Architecture must possess a Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited college or university in one of the School’s disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, or interior architecture and design, or closely related discipline. Qualified candidates must also possess an exemplary level of academic experience(s) and/or professional credentials that engender respect from the academy and the community at large. A well-documented reputation of leadership is required in at least one of the following areas: strategic planning; program, unit or department administration; interdisciplinary collaboration; faculty and/or curricular development; community outreach; or fundraising. The successful candidate will document qualifications that are commensurate with an appointment level of Full Professor with tenure.

Preferred: Knowledge of Las Vegas’ potential as a global city and of critical issues facing arid urban environments is also highly desirable. Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams is also preferred. An earned doctorate and professional licensure are preferred, but not required.

Submit a letter of interest, a detailed resume listing qualifications and experience, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three professional references who may be contacted. Applicants should fully describe their qualifications and experience, with specific reference to each of the minimum and preferred qualifications because this is the information on which the initial review of materials will be based.

Although this position will remain open until filled, review of candidates’ materials will begin on November 1, 2017 and best consideration will be gained for materials submitted prior to that date.  Materials should be addressed to Glenn Nowak, Search Committee Chair, and are to be submitted via on-line application at https://hrsearch.unlv.edu.  For assistance with UNLV’s on-line applicant portal, contact UNLV Employment Services at (702) 895-3504 or applicant.inquiry@unlv.edu.
