Position Description

The Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design (CED) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computation and Design Methods. This role focuses on applying computation as a creative, social, and technical force in architectural design, connecting intelligent environments and tools to questions of authorship, agency, governance, and participation.

Focus Areas:

  • Technically-Oriented Subjects: Building information modeling (BIM), digital twins, spatial data systems, and urban information systems.
  • Methodological Inquiry: Feedback systems, human-building interaction, participation, distributed agency, and self-regulating processes.
  • Sociotechnical and Critical Research: Platform studies, civic data, public-interest technology, and built-environment science and technology studies.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach computation both as an instrument of design and as a cultural actor with social, technical, and political consequences.
  • Advise and lead design studios and foundational representation courses.
  • Teach broad, large-format undergraduate lecture courses and advanced graduate seminars based on expertise.
  • Build collaborations across UC Berkeley’s campus (e.g., computing, data science, engineering) and develop funded research and partnerships with industry or public-sector organizations.

Qualifications

  • Basic Qualifications (Required at application): Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree.
  • Preferred Qualifications (By start date):
    1. A professional degree in architecture, design, or a related field (e.g., M.Arch, B.Arch, or equivalent); OR
    2. A Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in a related field.
  • Key Attributes: Candidates must demonstrate excellence in architecture, design, computation, or design methods through formal scholarship, technical production, creative practice, professional leadership, or public engagement. Evidence must show rigor, influence, and relevance to the production of architectural design knowledge.

Salary

  • $84,100 – $132,900 (9-month academic year salary).
  • Off-scale salary and other components of pay may be offered to meet competitive conditions.
