Associate Dean for Research – Syracuse University

Syracuse University School of Architecture seeks a dedicated and experienced leader for the position of Associate Dean for Research (ADR) starting August 15, 2020. The ADR will lead strategic efforts to promote and increase scholarship, creative work, and sponsored research at the School of Architecture; will assist in cultivating faculty research projects; and will work to develop innovative, collaborative and entrepreneurial initiatives within the School. The ADR will work closely with faculty and university research colleagues to identify funded research opportunities across the range of faculty expertise in technology, design and the humanities from government, corporate, foundation, university, and other sources. The ADR will assist in fostering interdisciplinary projects, be proactive in seeking new funding models, provide guidance in proposal development, help to interpret sponsor guidelines and regulations, and act as a liaison to the university’s foundation and grants administrators. The ADR will promote greater integration of research, scholarship, and creative work with the School’s global curricular initiatives. This is an academic year, tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with an administrative stipend, reduced teaching load, and the possibility of a summer appointment

The term of the initial ADR appointment will be three years with the possibility of renewal by mutual agreement.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment in architecture, engineering, design, or related professions, as well as a record of distinguished teaching and success in securing funding for research, scholarship and/or creative work. Administrative experience in grants management is preferred. Highly effective speaking, writing and communication skills and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are required.

Candidates must demonstrate a record of distinguished research which can include built work, theoretical explorations, and creative work or scholarship in the form of grants, publications or exhibitions. Professional design experience will be considered beneficial.

A professional or terminal degree in architecture or a related field is required; in addition, either professional registration or a PhD is preferred.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the job description, the ADR will be expected to offer instruction in one or more programs of the School, in the areas of building energy and environmental systems, material assemblies and fabrication, structural systems, and environmental design, with the ability to support the instruction of design studios at all levels.
